Let’s start with a challenge!  All you will need for this is a piece of wool or string, or anything you can tie a knot in – a shoelace will do if you’re stuck!  Take a moment to go and find what you need.

Ready?

Your challenge is to take hold of one end of the piece of wool or string with each hand and then to tie a knot without letting go.

Go on – give it a try!

How did you get on?  Did you manage?  Or does it seem like it’s impossible?

It’s actually quite easy when you know the secret.

It might have seemed difficult, but it’s not impossible after all.

Today we’re going to learn about someone from the Bible who received a promise from God that seemed impossible.  You can read about it in Genesis 12:1-3.

Watch this short video to learn about Abraham’s story:

Think for a moment: what does Abraham’s story teach us about God?

The Bible tells us that God always keeps his promises, even when it seems impossible.  He fulfils all the plans he sets out to achieve.

We have God’s promises too.  God doesn’t promise all of us that we will have a baby when we are very old, but we have lots of promises in the Bible.  Here are just a few:

  • The Lord hears his people when they call to him for help.  (Psalm 34:17)
  • The faithful love of the Lord never ends.  (Lamentations 3:22
  • If we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins.  (1 John 1:9)
  • Those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.  (Isaiah 40:31)

Which one of God’s promises do you want to remember today?

You could choose one of the promises above and make a poster to remind you.  Why not ask an adult to take a picture and email it to us.

We would love to see what you come up with!

God, thank you that nothing is impossible with you, that you kept your promises to Abraham and you keep your promises to us too.  Please help us to get to know you more and trust you more as we keep exploring the Bible together.  Amen.
