Who we are

Scripture Union Scotland is a registered charity that aims to see every child and young person in Scotland explore the Bible and respond to the significance of Jesus. We have an exciting opportunity for a Trainee Activity Instructor, based at one of our activity centres in Scotland. Lendrick Muir is located in central Scotland and set in 120 acres with accommodation for up to 162 guests. Our centres regularly host school groups participating in residential experiences, youth groups enjoying weekend breaks and a variety of SU Holidays. We aim to enable our guests to enjoy the outdoors, have fun, develop new skills and work together with a focus on building good relationships.  

This is a unique opportunity to learn outdoor instructional skills on the job while gaining the fuller experience of being part of a centre community. Throughout your training you will be mentored by an experienced instructor, and you will also be paid an allowance each month.  

Purpose 

As a Trainee Instructor you will be working as part of the Activities Team, learning to lead outdoor activity sessions for our guests and helping maintain the activity equipment and infrastructure. During residentials you will be involved in all aspects of caring for our guests, including some evening work. We will support you in developing your instructional and interpersonal skills and in gaining National Governing Body (NGB) awards.  At the end of a successful 2-year period you could have achieved 2 NGBs from the list below together with at least 3 other outdoor relevant qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Play an integral part of the outdoor instructional team, supporting outdoor activity sessions 
  • Undertake on the job training as well as work towards NGB qualifications  
  • Look after guests during school residentials, including some evening work 
  • Get involved in all aspects of centre life  
  • Take part in SU Scotland team meetings and Centre prayer meetings and Bible studies  

Who we are looking for

We are seeking applicants who have a desire to work with young people and have a track record of engaging regularly in sport and fitness. You should have an interest in adventurous outdoor activities (e.g. trail biking, climbing, paddle sports, hill walking) and some previous experience of working with young people. You will also need to be prepared to be outdoors whatever the weather! To gain the most from this post, applicants should be willing to commit to a period of 2 years in which you will need to be enthusiastic, proactive, and motivated and use some of your free time to actively work on skills development.

For this post, it is important that you are committed to SU Scotland’s ethos, working principles and vision and are able to demonstrate this through your commitment and motivation. It is also an Occupational Requirement (Equality Act - part 1, schedule 9), that the post-holder is a committed Christian.  

The successful applicant will be required to become a member of the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Scheme and the appointment will be subject to a satisfactory PVG Scheme Disclosure.
