Hello, my name is Cameron Swinton and I am the Regional Worker throughout East and West Dunbartonshire, alongside this role I work for an associate project called Contraflow which focuses specifically on schools ministry within Helensburgh.

If you want to stay informed and pray specifically for the work in this region please sign up to the newsletter, which can be done on this page. If you want to speak to myself regarding this ministry please contact me using the details above.

Prayer is the most vital component within this ministry, I would ask that you pray for the region, that children would have the opportunity to explore the Bible and respond to the significance of Jesus. There are many opportunities to volunteer whether that be in SU groups, camps and events. Any financial gifts or monthly commitments made to this ministry would be greatly appreciated. The more input and support given by yourself the more we can achieve throughout the region!

Please see below for further information about this ministry and how you can get involved:

Contraflow

Contraflow was originated by the local churches in Helensburgh and the surrounding area, when a group of representatives got together in early 1997 to discuss what could be done for the youth of the town. After much consideration, contact was made with Scripture Union and a committee was formed under the title of HACYP - 'Helensburgh Area Christian Youth Project'.

Finally in May 1998 a charitable trust was formed, with the name 'Contraflow' as the working title for the project.

The Contraflow Vision is:

To share God's love with young people in the area and to see them responding to the significance of Jesus through:

  • Exploring the Bible with the children and young people
  • Supporting youth leaders in the churches
  • Building relationships with the young people and their families

Prayer

Prayer is at the very heart of what we do, there are various ways you can pray for this ministry:

If you are part of a prayer group or individually would like to pray for a specific school in this region, then please visit our Pray for Schools page and find out more about how to register alongside those across Scotland who are praying for specific schools.

If you would like to receive my own quarterly prayer letter for Dunbartonshire, please email cameron.swinton@suscotland.org.uk and I will make sure you are added to the list.

Local Ministry Hubs

A key way we are looking to expand our ministries is through local ministry hubs around each high school cluster, meeting once or twice a term to pray for each school, and working together to bring meaningful Christian contact to the schools in each cluster and across the region. If you’d like to be involved in a hub, you can register here.

Churches

It is a privilege to get support and work with the many great local churches throughout this region.

Please get in touch if you would like support in equipping youth leaders, running a holiday club or mission, organising a curricular event for your local school (such as ‘Easter Code’) or if you would like your youth group invited to our events.

Schools

Children are the future of the church in Scotland, we live in a society that has no need or want for God’s word. This emphasises the need to run SU Groups within our schools so children have the opportunity to explore the truth of scripture.

SU Groups are an extra-curricular activity which run either during a lunch time or after school. They are run by volunteers and provide an opportunity for children and young people to explore the Bible in a safe environment. Everyone is welcome at an SU Group – from any faith background or none. It’s exciting for us to see children showing an interest in God who have never encountered him before!

If you have a burden regarding this work and have the time to spare, please get in touch to volunteer.

Holidays and Weekends

There are various weekends throughout the year, which are specific to Dunbartonshire and Helensburgh. Our residential weekend camps are great for children and volunteers to make new friendships, engage in activities and receive bible teaching.

SU Scotland run more than just regional weekends, we have an extensive programme for holidays. If you would like to find out more please access our SU Holidays website, or get in touch to request holiday brochures to promote the holidays at your church. If you'd be interested in volunteering at a residential event then I'd love to hear from you too!
