Episodes

Welcome to Episode 1 of One Big Story. Over the next ten episodes we're going to get to grips with the big picture of the Bible, and find out what it means for our lives today. Along the way, we'll see how it all points to Jesus, God's promised Messiah, who came to save the world!

In the first episode, we saw how God created the whole universe and everything in it. We learnt that human beings are made in God’s image, and how we’re made for a relationship with Him. In Episode 2, we pick up right where we left off last time. We zoom in on the story of the first two human beings, Adam and Eve, and how they ended up losing out on the paradise God had made for them.

In Episode 3 we see three big promises that God makes to His people through Abraham: one, that he would give Abraham the land of Canaan; two, that he would make Abraham into a great nation; and three, that he would bless all the nations of the earth through Abraham’s family. And that’s what the rest of the Bible is about: God’s plan to rescue the world through his chosen people!

Last time we left off with Jacob, his twelve sons and their families living together in Egypt. In Episode 4, we pick up the story a few centuries later: the people of Israel are still living in Egypt, and, just as God had promised, they had multiplied to become a great nation, but had been forced into slavery by the Egyptians. Because of God’s promise, the Israelites were liberated from centuries of oppression, and were finally free to continue their journey to the Promised Land.

In the last episode, we saw how God delivered his people out of slavery in Egypt. Just as He had promised Abraham hundreds of years before, He was leading them into a promised land that they could call home – the land of Canaan. But to get there, first they had to go out into the wild…

In Episode 5, we saw how God saved the Israelites from slavery in Egypt and promised them a new home. In the wilderness He had given them rules to keep them safe and rituals to keep them right with Him. He had shown them his favour, love and power, and had provided His chosen people with everything they needed. In Episode 6 we see how God fulfils His promise and brings His people into a new land to call their own.

Last time, we learnt how God fulfilled His promise and brought his people into the Promised Land and gave them victory as they fought against the Canaanites. This Episode, we learn about an even better promise: a coming King, a Messiah from the line of David, who would bring a new Kingdom, a new covenant, and justice and peace to the whole world!

In the last episode, we saw how God sent prophets to warn His people of His coming judgement, how the people refused to listen and instead rejected God, and how in judgement, God sent the nations of Assyria and Babylon to carry them off to exile. But that isn’t the end of the story. In Episode 7 we meet the promised Messiah who would once and for all save God’s people and establish God’s Kingdom: Jesus.

Last time, we met Jesus, the promised Messiah. We saw how people were amazed by His compassion and power to heal, and that many people followed Him and trusted Him as God’s chosen King. In Episode 9, we see how Jesus completes the work that He had come to do: the promised King gives up His life for His people. But we also see that amazingly, that isn’t the end of the story…

  • Episode 9 - Discussion Guide (text only)
  • Episode 9 - Video link with download option

In Episode 9 we saw that through His death and resurrection, Jesus had defeated death forever, and that eternal life is possible. In the final episode of One Big Story, we see an amazing vision of what that life is like. We see that those who put their trust in Jesus will live in a renewed and restored earth, where everything that is wrong with creation will be put right.
