Train to be an instructor in some of the UK’s outdoor beauty spots with SU Scotland. Whether it’s at Alltnacriche, our centre in the heart of the renowned Cairngorm National Park; Lendrick Muir, our largest centre set amidst miles of rolling countryside; or Gowanbank, a close-knit community with a scenic backdrop: we have a place for you!
What do we offer?
We offer a 2-year paid Trainee Instructor Programme for those ready to work towards National Governing Body (NGB) Qualifications, or a 1-year voluntary internship as a stepping-stone towards becoming an Instructor.

Your journey
As part of the team at one of our centres, you will work with young people and gain leadership skills in activities such as:
- Canoeing
- Climbing
- Mountain biking
- Bushcraft
As well as the activity-specific training and qualifications, you will have the opportunity to grow spiritually through:
- Bible studies
- Staff retreats
- Discipleship training
Your options
One-year voluntary internship
Enjoy free food, accommodation and mentoring throughout your purpose-filled adventure year. This year give you foundational experience in outdoor activity instruction, preparing you to apply for the two-year paid Trainee Instructor Programme.
Two-year paid Trainee Instructor Programme
You will receive a monthly salary as well as free accommodation, training and mentoring during this two-year programme. You will gain hands-on training and work towards NGB qualifications. You will deepen your understanding of the different challenges facing young people and broaden the range of young people you are able to effectively engage and develop through outdoor activities. As the programme progresses you will begin to lead sessions with increased responsibility.
To qualify for this programme you will have:
- worked with children and young people in a variety of different settings, including organising and delivering activities for them
- engaged in a variety of outdoor activities, taking responsibility for planning and organising some adventures and/or trips
- grown as a Christian as evidenced by your life choices and willingness to talk about your faith with others
- a desire to help children and young people enjoy the outdoors and explore the Bible for themselves
