Our Outdoor Instructor Development Programme enables you to train as an instructor in some of the UK’s outdoor beauty spots with SU Scotland, whilst growing in your relationship with God. You can take part in our one-year voluntary internship as a stepping-stone to prepare you for applying to the paid Trainee Instructor Programme that works towards National Governing Body (NGB) Qualifications.

Josh is in his first year of this programme at Alltnacriche, our outdoor residential centre in Aviemore. Josh has been inspired by how the team at support children and young people through each challenge they face, and this has helped him to realise the kind of work God is calling him into. He said:

“I can see clearly how God is developing my skills and giftings in how I work with young people and see them take steps towards Jesus. If you want to be in the outdoors making some memories while making a difference for the Kingdom, I could not recommend SU Scotland’s Trainee Instructor Programme more!”

Nathan is in the second year of the programme, and is also based at Alltnacriche. Nathan enjoys working with a diverse range of children and young people through school residentials, weekends, SU Holidays and our Growing Together Programme, designed to follow SU Scotland's Discover, Explore, Respond, Flourish framework with a focus on individual young people. He said:

“The opportunities that I have had through this job have been incredible: chances to grow, chances to gain outdoor qualifications, increasing my knowledge and experience, but most importantly chances to share my faith with others. The team, the work we do and the people we work with have made my time here immensely special; I cannot wait to see what God does next!”

If, like Josh and Nathan, you are passionate about outdoor activities, committed to your faith, and excited to serve young people, we would love to hear from you.

Applications for 2026 are open, you can find more information here. The deadline to apply is 4pm, 10 August 2026. If you would like to discuss the programmes or ask any questions, please contact: instructordevelopmentprogramme@suscotland.org.uk
