Children and Family Worker

  • Location: Ferniehill Evangelical Church, Edinburgh
  • Salary: £29k 
  • Hours: Full Time, including Sunday morning. (Part-time hours considered - minimum 21 hours per week, must include Thursday morning and Friday afternoon in term times, pro-rata).

Ferniehill Evangelical Church is an independent church situated in south-east Edinburgh, with a desire to strengthen and expand our children and families ministry. We are seeking someone with a passion for engaging and building relationships with children and families in their journey of faith, who can take responsibility for leading and developing this work as we seek to live out our vision for growth at Ferniehill. 

We are already blessed with a good number of children and youth in our ministries and are excited by the opportunity to extend and deepen our work in this area. We have created this role to help us disciple the children already in contact with the church and reach out to more. We long to see children and young people come to saving faith in the Lord Jesus, so if you share this passion, we look forward to hearing from you.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a vision for the care and teaching of children and families in the church and wider community, working with the leadership team and church membership.
  • Develop, manage and deliver a children’s programme on Sunday mornings, working with a team of volunteers, including occasional planning and delivery of an All Age Service.
  • Run an after-school club on a Friday afternoon in school term-time, and assist with the running of a weekly toddler group (currently Thursday mornings during term-time).
  • Further develop the existing links between the church and local primary schools, including assisting with running Scripture Union (SU) Scotland’s programme Bible Alive in those schools, maybe running an SU group, and developing and running an annual Holiday Club or other outreach event.
  • Undertake pastoral work with families, eg through parenting classes. Liaise and collaborate with other churches in the local area to build on good working relationships, sharing information and resources accordingly. plan and deliver occasional joint events, building a stronger Christian network for children and families across the area.
  • Attend regular leadership team meetings, maintain own safeguarding training up

Essential Attributes, Skills and Experience

  • Practising Christian, prepared to sign up to the Church’s Statement of Faith.
  • A passion for children’s care and discipleship.
  • Experience in children’s or families’ work, in either a Christian or secular context.
  • Proactive and organised, self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • A good listener, able to motivate and engage others to assist in ministry, and manage volunteers.
  • Experience of safeguarding procedures and practices.

Desirable Attributes, Skills and Experience

  • Relevant teaching or ministry qualification.
  • Evangelism gift and experience in evangelistic ministry.
  • Qualification in first aid.
