What is SHINE?
There are around 150 SU Groups in Scottish secondary schools. Wouldn’t it be brilliant if once a year there was something that would unite and motivate them all to share their faith in school?
Well now there is: SHINE in Schools! SU Scotland is joining our friends in SU Northern Ireland and SU England & Wales in the Shine in Schools project with the aim of seeing hundreds of school SU Groups and thousands of Christian young people across the UK emboldened to live out their faith in school. SHINE is three weeks’ worth of resources for secondary SU Groups aiming to:
EQUIP Christian young people to live for God at school
To give others the opportunity to EXPLORE the Christian faith
To help people PRAY for their schools
The idea is that groups all across the UK watch training videos over 2 weeks in November, and the third week run an outreach event. The week three events can be really low key, or as creative as your group want. It could simply be inviting friends along to watch and discuss the optional Week 3 video, or anything from someone sharing their testimony, to a grill-a-Christian panel, to booking out the assembly hall for a Christian band to play and share their faith. There are videos, ideas, event plans, posters and other resources available on the website for group leaders to download.
It’s an exciting opportunity to inspire and energise secondary SU Groups and Christian young people across the country to live out their faith in school.
What if your group are mainly non-Christian? Well SHINE is still for you. Just select the ‘non-Christians’ videos option on the website when registering and you’ll have access to Week 1 and Week 2 videos specially tailored for groups mainly made up of non-Christians.
How does it work?
Running SHINE is easy. Register your details on the website, then choose and download the videos appropriate to your group. Allow students to watch the videos and be thinking about what you will do for your SHINE event on week 3. Just follow these simple steps:
Week 1 (5th-9th Nov 2018)
Week 2 (12th-16th Nov 2018)
Week 3 (19th-23rd Nov 2018)
Watch video 1, pray together and start thinking about what you will do in week 3.
Watch video 2, continue praying and plan week 3. Hand out roles and responsibilities to members of your group to empower them to SHINE.
Run the event that you have been planning. Ideally this will be an opportunity for young people to explore the Bible and find out more about Jesus. To help with this, there is a short video you can show as part of your event.
Use your Week 3 event as a launch event for NUA, a new film-based course from Scripture Union Ireland that explores the Christian faith in a fresh way. nuafilmseries.org
And don’t worry if you can’t run SHINE in November – you can run it any time that suits you and your school.
What can i pray for?
In Week 1 (5-9 November), please pray for the following:
Give thanks for the 82 pupils who attended Go Conference in October. Many left the weekend challenged, inspired and equipped to stand for God in their school and live for him. Pray for the will to carry this through, and for increasing boldness and courage.
Give thanks for the 35 SU Group leaders who have registered for the SHINE in Schools project. As groups watch the first of three videos this week, pray for enthusiasm among pupils as well as leaders!
Give thanks for the freedom we have in Scotland to hold SU Groups in schools. Pray for protection over this ministry.
Give thanks for the team who produced the SHINE in Schools videos, including our own ML Stone! Pray for good feedback that will encourage the team and enable even better resources for 2019.
Pray for SU Groups not taking part in SHINE. Some SU Groups are small; there is competition from other clubs and sporting activities; lots consist of mainly non-Christian pupils. Pray for encouragement for leaders who find their group a struggle. Pray for growing faith.
In Week 2 (12-16 November), please pray for the following:
Week 2’s SHINE video will be shown this week. Pray for groups as they plan events – for unity in coming to a decision as to what to do; creativity; wisdom in approaching management for permission.
Give thanks for those who lead and manage our schools. Pray for good relationships between SU Groups and school management teams and for protection over SHINE events, that they will be well planned and run and find favour within the school.
Give thanks for the enthusiasm of children attending primary SU Groups towards what they hear of Jesus. Pray for pupils at secondary schools who used to attend a Primary SU Group; ask God to remind them of who he is, and to give them a desire to seek him.
Give thanks for SU Regional & Associate Workers and their close relationships with schools. Pray for their witness within their school communities and pray for open doors into schools where there is antagonism towards SU ministry.
Pray today for the schools where you live. Pray for children you know who attend them, and those you know who work in them. If you haven’t already registered prayer for your local school, register today.
In Week 3 (19-23 November), please pray for the following:
At the start of this SHINE events week, pray for God’s favour upon every event being held this week. Pray that pupils inviting friends will be encouraged by seeing them come along. Pray that young people who have never before thought of Jesus would stop to consider him and explore what faith means.
A Pray for SHINE lunch is being held in the Glasgow office. Pray for Dave Rickards as he speaks and for our invited guests, that they would be inspired by what they hear of SHINE and be inspired to serve God in their local schools.
“If I said at school that I was a Christian and went to SU, that would be social suicide.” Many Christian pupils feel like this; pray for those who find it hard to be a Christian at school. Pray for courage to either start, or associate themselves with, an SU Group in their school.
Pray for SU Group leaders who registered for SHINE but who have encountered a lukewarm response from pupils or within the school. Pray that they will persevere and not give up; pray they see the value of their witness.
There are great needs in schools. Pray that SHINE will not be a one-off event, but that pupils will continue to shine for Jesus in every aspect of their life at school.
