With so many of us carrying around smartphones and tablets now, we thought we'd introduce you to a few of our favourite tools for digital Bible engagement...

The Bible App Bible App

Powerful free app with over 800 reading plans and many Bible translations, including some audio Bibles. This is easily our most-used app across the organisation!

"I use YouVersion for Bible reading plans. The thing I like most about it is that as a group of friends we can follow the same plan at the same time and interact with it through the app. It’s not a substitute for small group face to face Bible study in my opinion, but something to complement it!" Chris

"I love how you can also listen to good quality readings of the NLT through the app, which is handy for catching up on your readings in the car!" Robin

Bible for Kids Bible For Kids App

Made by the same people resonsible for the YouVersion Bible App, this one is all about helping kids fall in love with the Bible.

"I keep this app on my iPad for when my young cousins are about. It tells each story as an interactive sort of ebook - things to click on to find out more, etc. It is very simple and user friendly, they seemed to like it." Cassie

WordLive Word Live App

WordLive, from Scripture Union England & Wales, is a free online guide, helping you meet with God devotionally. Each day uses a new Bible passage with fresh resources to refresh your quiet time with God.

"I like WordLive as an e-mail comes in every night with the following day’s reading. If, like me, you check your phone first thing every morning to see if you have missed anything overnight, it’s a great start to the day." Alison

Recommended by: Alison McKie, Michael Cook

NeuBible Neubible App

For straightforward Bible reading, this app prides itself on being a really clean interface with no frills. It has limited choice of versions at present though and is only available on iOS.

ESV: Daily Bible Reading podcast Esv Podcast

This podcast follows the reading plan found in the ESV Daily Reading Bible. Each day has one Old Testament reading, one New Testament reading, and one reading from the Psalms. Over the course of a year, you’ll read the Old Testament once and the New Testament and Psalms twice.

Rythms Rhythms App

Rhythms is an initiative run by Tearfund, of people living differently and changing their world. We think it's brilliant as a practical outworking of faith!

Olive Tree Bible Olive Tree App

"I’m happy with the Olive Tree Bible app where you can have multiple Bible translations in the one app and they are downloaded to your phone, not signal dependent as some free Bible apps are." Colin

Recommended by: Colin Carmichael, Andy Bathgate

Other apps we like:

  • The Logos app means I have a large library of ebooks including Message Speaks Today series and IVP reference work on my phone and iPad. Recommended by Michael Cook.
  • The Good News Bible - a great app for children and adults! Recommended by Dave Clipston.
  • iTunesU carries loads of terrific biblical / theological lecture material. Recommended by Andy Bathgate.
  • And of course... Guardians of Ancora, launching this summer! Developed by SU England & Wales, Guardians of Ancora is a compelling interactive and safe virtual world for children that will help them to explore the Bible in exciting and relevant ways.
