In 2019 we are delighted to launch a brand-new Mission event partnering with churches in North Berwick.

We caught up with Hazel Gray, the event leader, to ask a few questions…

What is the dream?

The dream is to see children and young people coming along to hear about Jesus and respond to his good news. We want to reach out to our local area and represent the Christian community by working together as different churches, under the umbrella of SU Scotland.

What existing ministry to children is happening in the town?

In the churches, there are a number of different Sunday Clubs during church time and Messy Churches.  In school, there is an SU group for P3s and P4s.  We have also been involved in assemblies and RME including Christmas and Easter presentations. We plan to consider the follow up to holiday club and whether there is a possibility of running something else to keep in touch with the children over the year.

What did you do?

I started working with Abbey Church in the town in September 2018, and a holiday club was one of the areas I was keen to develop.  I initially spoke to SU’s Tim Raynes, about the possibility of partnering with SU Scotland and then visited a meeting of the local joint churches group, sharing my proposal and was given positive feedback.

I then sought to find support within congregations to ensure we would have a team. I advertised an open meeting for anyone interested where I shared the vision and people were able to share their thoughts on how it should take shape. There has been a history of holiday clubs in the area, which was helpful to draw on, although they haven’t run for the last few years.

My next step was to put together a small planning group to sort out dates, times, age groups, teaching, theme, etc. Three of us met at the end of March and we are now in the process of sharing the plans with the churches, recruiting a team, and communicating the date through the churches and local primary school.

Who is involved?

Five churches have agreed to be involved from a mixture of denominations.  We hope to have team members from all five churches, and a mix of ages including some teenage helpers.  We also have the possibility of some visiting team from contacts we have in the area.

Thanks loads Hazel, sounds great!
