We are so pleased to bring you some Good News Stories from Missions! Watch this space for more to come soon... In this blog, Tim Raynes, Missions Development Manager, shares the exciting growth at Cockenzie and Port Seton Mission.
I had privilege to recently meet with one of our Mission Team Leaders, Sheila Bulloch. Sheila has been Team Leader at the SU Scotland-partnered mission event in Cockenzie and Port Seton, East Lothian for the past couple of years, with SU bringing in a Team Leader for the first few years.
The SU Mission partners with the Parish churches in the communities as there was recognition of the very low number of children and families engaging in church. One church had 3-6 children per week in Sunday School; often there would be none.
SU partnered with the churches to run three strategically placed Activity Days (one-day Holiday Clubs running on Bank Holidays or Saturdays). These gave the local team an opportunity to see what was possible.
The first week-long Holiday Club began and has run every year since, averaging 25-30 P1-P7 children.
One of the churches launched Kids Kirk, a monthly Saturday morning 8 times a year event for P1-P7s averaging 20-25 children exploring a Biblical story and its impact into their lives..
Recognising that P7s were growing too old for the Holiday Club, the church developed Youth Kirk for the same purpose for P7-S3s, starting with 4 young people, running monthly on Sunday evenings.
Youth Kirk grew to 12.
Youth Kirk grew to 18
Another possible 6 are ready to begin.
The church now has over 90 children and young people engaged in Kids or Youth Kirk, the majority who are from unchurched families, with 6 of the young people rotating as young leaders at Kids Kirk and the Holiday Club.
Kids Kirk Quotes:
- “We love Kids Kirk!”
- “We love crafts and feast time”
- “Why can’t Kids Kirk meet every Saturday?”
Youth Kirk Quotes
- “It’s a place where I feel safe”
- “I can spend time with my friends and learn about Jesus”
- “I love exploring the Bible you gave us, its fab!”
- “I love being part of this team.”
- “The leadership is great and we all work together.”
- “It’s a joy to watch the young people explore the Bible and make us think!”
It is such a privilege to have played a small part in supporting these churches to engage with children and young people, helping them explore the Bible and respond to the significance of Jesus.
