This week our gap year team of Rachael Duff and Anna Strong are in Kiev visiting the SU Open Bible team in Ukraine. The team is being led by Colin Carmichael, our Regional Worker for the North Highlands, Western Isles and Orkney.
A busy programme is planned with various church and school visits, time with Open Bible staff and volunteers, and for excursions and sight-seeing, too!
There was definitely a combination of excitement and nerves as they anticipated the trip...
Rachael: "I am both a mixture of excited and nervous about this trip to Ukraine. It will be a great experience to see how Open Bible function and what day to day life is like for the SU staff. However I'm a little apprehensive about the flying and the language barrier. I just need to remember that it is all in God's hands and he will protect us throughout all we do."
Anna: "I am super excited for going to Ukraine but also pretty nervous about the trip! The opportunities to work with all sorts of people there will be wonderful. I find culture fascinating so I am interested to go from that point of view. I think the most difficult thing for me will be working in a different culture with a new language and adapting to that but I really cannot wait!! I'm really praying that we will depend on God at all times and be an encouragement to the Ukrainians."
Colin: "My previous and only visit to Ukraine was in October 2006 when I went with friends to see Scotland play football in a European Championship qualifier. (Scotland lost the match 2-0.) I am looking forward to another visit and the chance that it brings to work alongside international SU colleagues. During our time in Ukraine there will be the challenges of a different language and culture but I pray that we experience unity in Christ as we serve the same Lord."
In spite of concerns about the language barrier, by day 2 they were learning Seek Ye First in Ukrainian!
