Scripture Union Scotland is a registered charity that aims to help all of Scotland’s children and young people explore the significance of Jesus Christ for their lives. We have a vacancy for a Trainee Instructor, based at one of our activity centres in Scotland. Alltnacriche is close to Aviemore with accommodation for up to 58 guests and is set in 17 acres of grounds.

Our centre regularly hosts school groups participating in residential experiences, youth groups enjoying weekend breaks and SU Holidays. We use outdoor activities to build relationships with young people, offering the opportunity to have fun, develop new skills and work together.

As a Trainee Instructor you will be working as part of the activity team, trained to lead outdoor activity sessions for our guests and helping to maintain the activity equipment and infrastructure. During school residentials you will be involved in all aspects of caring for our guests, including some evening work. Applicants for this post should have a desire to work with young people and have a demonstrated interest in outdoor activities. They should have some previous experience of working with young people.

To gain the most from this post, applicants should be willing to commit to an initial period of 2 years, during which time we will support them in developing their instructional and group work skills and in gaining NGB awards. We would expect you to gain the following qualifications during the first two years employment:

Year 1

  • Outdoor first aid
  • Archery Leader
  • BCU Paddlesport Instructor
  • Woodland Activity Leader

Year 2

  • BCU Paddlesport Leader
  • British Cycling Level 2 Mountain Bike Leader
  • Velotech Silver Award in bike maintenance or Competent person training in adventurous activity PPE inspection

After successful completion of the initial two years training, the contract could be extended for a further year. This would give the opportunity for focus on an agreed area, mentored by an experienced instructor. Options include, but are not limited to:

  • Rock Climbing Instructor
  • BCU Canoe Coach or Canoe Leader
  • Climbing Wall Award
  • Summer Mountain Leader
  • Level 3 Mountain Bike Leader

For this post, it is important that you are committed to SU Scotland’s ethos, working principles and vision and are able to demonstrate this through your commitment and motivation. It is also an Occupational Requirement (Equality Act - part 1, schedule 9), that the post-holder is a committed Christian.

The successful applicant will be required to become a member of the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Scheme and the appointment will be subject to a satisfactory PVG Scheme Disclosure.
