Local Area Workers

Scripture Union, as a volunteer movement, has several models of volunteer working in Scottish Schools.  Each volunteer is supported by a small number of full-time regional staff workers.  The majority of our volunteers are teachers, parents, senior pupils and students who, week by week, organise Scripture Union groups in schools.  Around the country we also have men and women who serve in an increased capacity supporting and developing our work in a more in-depth way.  We call these people, Local Area Workers.

The role is open to any Christians with a heart to see young people hearing God speak through His Word.  Such people are volunteers, who in the past have been housewives, shop owners, students and retired teachers – in short people who have extra time available in which they want to serve God. The only qualities required are a love for children and young people and experience in working with them.  Since Local Area Workers represent Scripture Union Schools, we are looking for people with integrity and ease in relations with adults and young people.

Local Area Workers support other volunteers in SU situations, by encouraging, praying and sharing ideas and resources.  According to individual gifting, other areas of service may include taking assemblies and RE classes, organising or supporting out of school events or weekends away.

A closer look...

picture of Sheila McBrideSheila McBride is the Local Area Worker for Muirhouse and Pilton, Edinburgh. She has a great involvement in supporting a number of activities in the local area.

There are 4 Primary School SU groups running in that area and each group has a weekly after-school meeting, an end-of-term outing and the opportunity to attend SU camp during Easter /Summer holidays.

An out-of-school group is run weekly in the halls of a local church. This caters for S1 - S6 who have been members of the Primary groups. It is conducted in 3 units (S1/S2: S3/S4:S5/S6) and is run by a team of around 10 young people (mainly students).

The members participate in more frequent outings than the Primary groups and also have the opportunity to attend SU Camp usually in Summer.
