School SU Groups

SU Scotland - Education and Schools - SU In Your Schools - School SU Groups

Introduction

SU groups come in all shapes and sizes: primary or secondary; lunchtime or after-school; a handful or a crowd; in-depth Bible study or games and fellowship; Youth Alpha discussions or prayer meetings.

By last academic session, one in seven Scottish schools had their own SU Group (283 primaries, 141 secondaries), and we know of many other schools who would wish to have their own SU group, if only there were the volunteers available, whom we could support, to make it happen.

So, other than the fact that all groups need to register with SU Scotland to be recognised as legitimate groups, what makes them different from any other school group or Sunday club? Groups don't gather together because they're from the same church or denomination, but because they are committed to Christ, committed to reading the Bible, willing to work as part of a team and willing to learn.

All SU groups are guided by the values of a Scripture Union school group (available for download at the side of this page). The SU Group Leaders Manual was recently issued to the Team Leaders of all our SU Groups and is also available for download on this page. This provides guidance on resources, faith development and working effectively in a school context. All matters of policy and procdure that define our work in SU Scotland are contained in the Volunteers' Handbook issued each year to accredited volunteers and staff.

If you wish to start an SU Group in your local school, or you want to register an existing group with SU, or you just want to chat things through, then please contact your local Regional Worker. You will also find it helpful to use the document entitled "Starting an SU Group." This is part of the Group Leaders manual or can can be downloaded separately from the supporting information at the side of this page.
