SU in Your School
Introduction
Scripture Union Scotland aims to give young people the
opportunity to explore and respond to the significance of Jesus
Christ. We seek to support schools across Scotland and to provide
pupils with opportunities to explore values and beliefs from a
Christian perspective through classroom work, assemblies and
residential experiences.
We develop our work for schools in line with the principles and
capacities of the Curriculum for
Excellence; to help pupils develop and communicate their own
beliefs as confident individuals, and to make informed choices as
responsible citizens.
Scripture Union Groups in schools
are voluntary groups led by parents, school staff, SU Scotland
staff or other volunteers. They usually meet at lunchtimes or after
school and provide an opportunity for worship in the informal
curriculum (as laid out in Religious Observance legislation) as
well as opportunities for young people to explore the Christian
faith for themselves through activities, discussions and
investigating the Bible. Volunteers helping in these groups each
receive Network News twice
per year; back copies and live links are available online.
We offer secondary schools the opportunity of hosting a Christian Focus Week. This is a
high energy programme, often involving creative arts, that
encourages pupils to explore their own beliefs whilst learning
aspects of the Christian faith, develop skills to make informed
choices whilst contributing to the spiritual development of the
school community.
Much of SU Scotland's work in schools is delivered by dedicated volunteers who are offered training and support by Regional Staff. There are schools who are ready to partner with us and allow us to work with them for the spiritual development of their pupils. Some of these opportunities cannot be taken up due to limited numbers of volunteers. Teachers, parents, senior pupils, youth workers ministers and others are already volunteering with us in schools across Scotland. Would you be able to join them by volunteering in your local area?
The Damaris Trust
SU Scotland is a partner
with the Damaris Trust, an educational
charity with a Christian foundation.
The schools department of Damaris specialises in the provision of innovative and excellent materials for schools and seeks to assist teachers to promote spiritual development through resources that use reflective and critical thinking skills.
