Hi, my name is John Nonhebel, I am am the Urban Ministries Leader with Scripture Union Scotland.
I live in Glasgow with my family, but previously lived for 20 years in Mumbai, India – one of the largest cities in the world, with a population of twenty million people.
I am passionate about working among the poor and marginalised and believe very strongly that the gospel is good news for the poor and had the ability to trnasform lives.
I am very excitedto be working with SU Scotland and am challenged by the needs of that we see around us, both in the larger cities as well as many towns, where many continue to live, stuck in a cycle of poverty.
The Urban Ministries Leader role has five main parts:
- To support and develop regional urban ministry across Scotland.
- To co-ordinate Motiv8 Holidays, in collaboration with the Holidays Department.
- To network with others involved in urban ministry on local and national levels.
- To organise training events for people involved with urban ministry.
- To be involved in hands-on work with urban young people.
Scripture Union Scotland's urban work exists to ensure that, as outlined in our strategy document, priority is given to children and young people who live in urban priority areas - who often grow up in difficult environments. Statistics suggest that 26% of Scotland's children grow up in poverty and Scripture Union Scotland, through its urban work, is actively looking to partner with churches to develop more work in these areas.
If you'd like to get involved in SU Scotland's urban ministry we would love to hear from you. Please follow the links on the urban ministries pages to find out how.
SU Scotland seeks to encourage and support churches in their work with children and young people in their communities. I am keen to work with churches in helping to deliver relevant training to help develop effective work in urban priority areas.
