Hi, my name is Andrew Thompson and I have been in the role of Regional Worker for the North East & Shetland since April 2008. The role is both challenging and rewarding. It involves work that is focused on young people in school and also through residential experiences.
Since November 2011, and the appointment of Alan Myles as
Regional Worker for Moray and the South Highlands and Islands, my
Region is now made up of the three local authority areas of
Aberdeen City and Shire and the Shetland Islands. This
also includes the Independent Schools in the area and therefore
means a region of around 280 schools.
My role frequently involves delivering assemblies, mainly into
primary schools. It also involves visiting existing SU groups
and helping to set up new SU groups in both primary and secondary
schools. These groups may meet during lunchtime or after
school and are run voluntarily by a variety of people such as
teachers, ministers, parents, youth workers, students and members
of local churches. Developing ways of supporting and
encouraging people in this vital ministry is key to the regional
work of SU. Residential experiences provide an opportunity
for young people to engage in a variety of activities, make new
friends and learn more about the Christian faith. These, too,
depend largely on committed volunteers.
It is exciting to see God at work through the variety of ways in
which people serve Him and the variety of ways opportunities arise
for developing new initiatives. If you would like to know
more about the work of SU in the region, would like to support the
work financially, prayerfully or by being involved I would be only
too glad to hear from you.
Our office continues to have videos available for group leaders' use and we are adding a stock of other resources such as books, DVDs and CDs. With the office normally open on a Wednesday and Thursday, please drop in or contact us to hear about other openings that we offer to make these resources available.
There is a regular prayer meeting in Aberdeen on the first
Monday of the month, 7.30pm. It would be good to see you
there.
