Motiv8 - Urban

Introduction

Hi there.  I’m Jenny Abbott and I work as SU Scotland’s Urban Ministries Co-ordinator.  It’s a bit of a long title, and what does it actually mean?  

My role has five main parts;

1. To support and develop regional urban ministry across Scotland.
2. To co-ordinate Motiv8 Holidays, in collaboration with the Holidays Department.
3. To network with others involved in urban ministry on local and national levels.
4. To organise Motiv8 training, and provide training for SU Scotland staff on urban issues.
5. To be involved in hands on work with urban young people.
   

Urban Work

So what’s this ‘urban’ thing all about?  Have a look at the urban pages to discover more, but basically when we talk about ‘urban children and young people’ we mean those who are growing up in poverty.  And that’s 25% of Scotland’s children!  Maybe that’s you?  Or someone you know? Or maybe you’ve no idea what it’s like to face the stresses and inequalities poverty causes.  We believe Jesus knows, and wants to be real to everyone; no matter their background.  

My Background

So, what’s my background?  I was brought up in a loving family in the heart of the English countryside and became a Christian (at age 11) when I was on a family holiday, through a Scripture Union Beach Mission.  I came to Edinburgh in 1997 to study Spanish and Portuguese and was going to be a missionary abroad until God called me to Scotland!  I then studied Social Work and worked for four years with Children and Families in Edinburgh until I moved into this job in March 2007.  I love hanging out with my friends and family, travelling and enjoying God’s creation.
