This is such a fantastic idea.
We are currently looking at prayer in our Sunday sessions and the series is called 'pray at all times' We have seen some amazing things happen in the youngest of our children and it is an absolute privaledge to be a part of the journey God is them on.
I would love to see families coming together to pray and admire the work you are doing.
Thank you for the inspiration to keep going!!

Thanks for the helpful picture of the "big journey", David.

It would be good to get an update half way through the year how these relationships with first years have developed, how well the transition to secondary school life has been handled and also how the November weekend turned out...!

Thank you Chris - your first sentence cannot be understated! Equipping and encouraging young people must be deliberate, and the focus of COmMISSION on achieving these goals is a valuable service to the wider church. I appreciate the testimonies to its success from Faye and Kelly as well!

Thanks Emlyn
Your piece is a helpful reminder, not just of Scripture Union involvement in various countries around the world, but of God's work through his people in these places.
Yes, so much news headlines report tales of tragedy and we understand why "bad" news attracts headlines - but thank you for the prompt to remember the unseen and unheralded work of God's people. This work carries eternal significance and though it is little valued just now, one day it will be very different! (1 Corinthians 4:5)

Hi Bob, thanks so much for your comment. The statistic of 21% is taken from a recent Scottish Government publication on the Child Poverty Strategy, and as you say, it's a disgrace in this day and age.

At SU Scotland, we recognise we have a great opportunity to influence the lives of children and young people through our schools and holidays programme. We are, however, looking to build more partnerships, and one of our hopes is that as this work gains a higher priority there will be more people doing what you refer to – seeking to advocate for change.

We also recognise that change can happen from two directions – from the top through a policy initiative, and from grassroots up, where those involved at a community level seek to implement practices and programmes which make a difference to the lives of the poor.
In line with our mission statement, we are actively involved within local communities, seeking to bring change from within, and are also fully supportive those advocating for change at the top level.

I discovered this blog post via Twitter. Many thanks for it – the issues about poverty which it raises are important for all of us.

I agree completely with everything you are saying.

However, in addition, I’d like to see an emphasis on our duty as Christians to change such inequalities in society. If it is correct that 21% of young people in Scotland are living in poverty then that is a disgrace in this day and age. We should all be striving to change that, and to bring about a more just society. I believe that this is part of our mission as Christians.

I hope that this is not seen as criticism of the article. It’s just that I would have liked it to say more about our duty to strive for change.

Thank you for the encouragement, Rebecca!
And often, people "hear" loving actions more clearly than words... I'm grateful too that the language difficulties you describe didn't prevent the team from making such a helpful contribution to the holiday club.

Great to read about the happy Holiday Clubs at Annbank & Tarbolton. So encouraging for all of you involved. I met Sandra Tanner a long while ago; so glad to hear she's still helping with the work. I helped to start the Largs Churches Holiday Club seventeen years ago & we haven't missed a year. All seven of our Largs Churches are involved. We go round the four biggest church halls in rota. May the Lord bless & prepare the children & Teams to be involved in the holiday clubs all over the country this summer 2011!

Abe's & Nadine's story is most interesting & even inspiring. I wish them all that is good as they continue to work at Lendrick Muir with children & young people. I'm all in favour of internationalism & I think the kids who will come to Lendrick Muir will specially enjoy having English & German instructors. My daughter-in-law, Mrs Dorothy Urquhart, always brings about 15 primary SU kids to the May 'OpenAyr' w/e, when about 100 children come to LM, so she will meet Abe & Nadine. I will certainly pray for the Lord's continued blessing upon them both.
